What are the possible side effects of Lo / Ovral-28?
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction to Lo/Lo / Ovral-28-28: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Stop using Lo/Lo / Ovral-28-28 and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:
-
sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body;
-
sudden and severe headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech, or balance;
-
chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling;
-
sudden cough, wheezing, rapid breathing, coughing up blood;
-
pain, swelling, warmth, or redness in one or both legs;
-
a change in the pattern or severity of migraine headaches;
-
nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
-
swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet;
-
a breast lump; or
-
symptoms of depression (sleep problems, weakness, tired feeling, mood changes).
Less serious Lo/Lo / Ovral-28-28 side effects may include:
-
mild nausea (especially when you first start taking this medicine), vomiting, bloating, stomach cramps;
-
breast tenderness or swelling, nipple discharge;
-
freckles or darkening of facial skin, increased hair growth, loss of scalp hair;
-
changes in weight or appetite;
-
problems with contact lenses;
-
vaginal itching or discharge; or
-
changes in your menstrual periods, decreased sex drive.

An increased risk of the following serious adverse reactions has been associated with the use of oral contraceptives :

What is the most important information I should know about Lo / Ovral-28?
- Lo / Ovral-28 may cause dizziness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Lo / Ovral-28 with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
- Follow your doctor's instructions for examining your own breasts and report any lumps immediately.
- If you will be having surgery or will be confined to a bed or chair for a long period of time (such as a long plane flight), notify your doctor 3 to 4 weeks ahead of time. Special precautions may need to be taken in these circumstances while taking Lo / Ovral-28.
- Lo / Ovral-28 may cause dark skin patches on your face. Exposure to the sun may make these patches darker. If patches develop, use a sunscreen or protected clothing when exposed to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths.
- Use of Lo / Ovral-28 will not prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
- Bleeding or spotting may occur while taking Lo / Ovral-28. Do not stop taking Lo / Ovral-28 if this occurs. If bleeding or spotting continues for more than 7 days or is heavy, contact your doctor.
- Lo / Ovral-28 may increase the risk of stroke, heart attack, blood clots, high blood pressure, or similar problems. The risk may be greater if you smoke.
- Lo / Ovral-28 may interfere with certain lab tests. Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know you are taking Lo / Ovral-28.
- Taking certain antibiotics, anticonvulsants, or other medicines, as listed in the interactions section, while you are using Lo / Ovral-28 may decrease the effectiveness of Lo / Ovral-28. To prevent pregnancy, use an extra form of birth control until your next period.
- If you wear contact lens and you develop problems with them, contact your doctor.
- If you miss your period during the week of inactive pills, call your doctor immediately. A missed period may indicate that you are pregnant.
- Lo / Ovral-28 may take time to wear off after your last dose. You may not be able to become pregnant for several months after stopping Lo / Ovral-28. Discuss any concerns with your doctor or pharmacist.
- Lab tests, including PAP tests, may be performed while you use Lo / Ovral-28. These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
- Lo / Ovral-28 is not recommended for use in CHILDREN who have not had their first menstrual period. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
- PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Do not use Lo / Ovral-28 if you are pregnant. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor right away. Lo / Ovral-28 is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Lo / Ovral-28.
Lo / Ovral-28 contraindications
Combination oral contraceptives should not be used in women with any of the following conditions: - Thrombophlebitis or thromboembolic disorders - A past history of deep-vein thrombophlebitis or thromboembolic disorders - Cerebral-vascular or coronary-artery disease (current or history) - Thrombogenic valvulopathies - Thrombogenic rhythm disorders - Major surgery with prolonged immobilization - Diabetes with vascular involvement - Headaches with focal neurological symptoms - Uncontrolled hypertension Known or suspected carcinoma of the breast or personal history of breast cancer - Carcinoma of the endometrium or other known or suspected estrogen-dependent neoplasia - Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding - Cholestatic jaundice of pregnancy or jaundice with prior pill use - Hepatic adenomas or carcinomas, or active liver disease, as long as liver function has not returned to normal - Known or suspected pregnancy - Hypersensitivity to any of the components of Lo/Lo / Ovral-28
